Soroptimist International of Arcata Honors Seniors

Soroptimist International of Arcata recently honored Mary Anne and Tapuni ("Cap") Ioelu as its senior citizens of the month.  Mary Anne was born and raised in Arcata and attended local schools.  Her parents, Anna and Paul Ely, owned the Varsity Sweet Shop on the plaza in Arcata during the 1940's through the mid 1960's; and Mary Anne worked there from an early age.  She has been associated with Soroptimist of Arcata for most of her life.  Her mother, Anna, was a charter member of the Arcata club in 1954; her father, Paul, was a great "Soroptimister", supporting her mom and helping with fundraising projects.  Paul and Anna perfected the spaghetti sauce recipe used by the club for many years in its popular annual fundraiser.  At one time Paul was honored as the club's Senior Citizen of the Month.  Mary Anne's younger sister, Kathleen, was once honored as the Girl of the Month. Mary Anne has been a member since 1972 and was honored with a Founder Region fellowship in 2006.

Cap was born and raised in American Samoa and moved to Arcata to attend Humboldt State College in 1950.  He was an active member of the Exchange Club for several years.  He and Mary Anne are active members of the Arcata United Methodist Church where they are both members in the Bells of the Redwoods.  Cap was at one time the chairman of the Pacific Islander Caucus of the United Methodist Church at the district and conference levels.

Mary Anne has been employed by Varsity Ice Cream for 33 years.  Cap has owned and operated the Electric Shaver Shop in Eureka since 1990.

Cap and Mary Anne have been married for 53 years.  They have one daughter, Melanie, two grandsons, and one great grandson.

Soroptimist International of Arcata Participates in day of Service

Soroptimist International of Arcata recently participated in Saturday of Service by providing groceries for three families who take part in the Arcata House Transitional Housing Program.  Families and individuals live in one of three neighborhood-level homes while they save money and work hard to overcome the challenges that led to their becoming homeless.  Each family receives wraparound case management services, linkages to community services, financial literacy and life skills education and many other services.

Soroptimist Saturday of Service is a day when Soroptimists throughout the world carry out service projects to emphasize and provide visibility to our organization.  Our clubs provide many initiatives in our communities and this is a special day to emphasis that service.

Shown in picture organizing donated groceries for the three homes are Maralee Davis, Ellie Carr, Linda Johnson, Virginia Orlandi, Yvonne White, Debbie Coles, Alayne McClendon, Tish Unterkoefler, Laurie Mark, and Gerry Pigg.  Not shown: President Anita Trigeiro

Soroptimists of Arcata Honor Seniors Charlie and Kay Tubbs

Soroptimist International of Arcata recently honored Charlie and Kay Tubbs as its Senior Citizens of the Month.  Mr. Tubbs graduated from Humboldt State College in 1957.  Thereafter, he joined the U. S. Marine Corp where he flew helicopters and jets.  After 30 years of service, he retired at the rank of colonel.  After retirement he and Mrs. Tubbs settled in Arcata. Mrs. Tubbs, who also attended Humboldt State, grew up in Klamath and was a teacher's aide in the Arcata School District.

The Tubbs have spent their retirement years traveling and doing volunteer work in campgrounds.  For one summer, they volunteered at Indian Grinding Rock State Park, CA, serving as campground hosts, and working in the museum. They also spent a summer in Kodiak, Alaska, serving as campground hosts. For the last 22 years they have volunteered at Yellowstone National Park during the park's tourist season.  From 1988 to 1995, they worked in the campground, getting visitors settled into camp sites.  From 1996 to the present, they have worked as back-country rangers, clearing and maintaining trails, checking back-country sites, providing information and instruction to visitors in the area and maintaining much of the back-country equipment.

When not at Yellowstone, Mr. and Mrs. Tubbs volunteer at St. Mary's Church in Arcata.  Charlie helped with the construction of the church and does whatever is necessary for the community.  Kay volunteers at St. Mary's School.  She volunteers as an instructional aide, helps with the scrip program, and helps with general fundraisers.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Tubbs are members of the Arcata Volunteer Police Department.  They have four children and seven grandchildren.

Soroptimist is an international volunteer service organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world.
